Revelers in Minsk celebrate end of Butter Week
Revelers gathered in the Central Botanical Garden in Minsk on February 21 to celebrate the end of Maslenitsa (Butter Week), which is observed by Orthodox Christians during the last week before the Great Lent.
They were treated to pancakes that have been cooked during Butter Week for centuries, as well as took part in a variety of strength contests and rode horses.
In the culmination of the celebration an effigy of Lady Maslenitsa was burned.
"We all long for new spring days," said Alena Sakuranka, of the Central Botanical Garden. "We want spring to come with bright sunlight, bring us warm days and a good harvest."
"We have much various entertainment today. People are smiling, are happy. And of course hot pancakes are on offer," she said.
