Ambassador: France would like to cooperate with a Belarus that has internal unity, reconciliation
France would like to cooperate with a Belarus that has internal unity and reconciliation, Ambassador Michel Rainieri said at a reception held by the French embassy in Minsk on Thursday on the occasion of Bastille Day.
"History shows that the presence of dissidents in prisons has never made a country great. I believe your country will become stronger if all opinions are taken into consideration on its territory," Mr. Rainieri said in his speech.
He referred to France's Bastille fortress-prison, which he said housed many prisoners of conscience in the past. "Today the world remembers well the names of the prisoners: Voltaire, Richelieu, Beaumarchais. The names of the judges have been forgotten by history forever," the ambassador said.
Mr. Rainieri stressed that not a single European Union country was questioning Belarus' independence and borders. "And even if someone thought about that, France would be the first to oppose that," he said //
