Mother of Paval Sevyarynets to stand trial on Monday over “silent” protest

Tatsyana Sevyarynets, the mother of prominent opposition activist Paval Sevyarynets, is to stand trial in a district court in Vitsyebsk on July 11 over her participation in a “silent” protest on Independence Day (July 3).

Police officers visited the woman at her home on Friday evening and took her to a police station where she was charged with acting in violation of regulations governing street demonstrations under Article 23.34 of the Civil Offenses Code.

As Paval Sevyarynets told BelaPAN, his mother was then brought to the Kastrychnitski District Court for trial, but Judge Yawhen Burunow postponed the hearing to Monday after she demanded a defense lawyer.

Mrs. Sevyarynets, a regional coordinator of the Belarusian Christian Democracy party, was released and returned home.
