Government to raise excise taxes on alcoholic and tobacco products in September

he rates of excise taxes on alcoholic and tobacco products are expected to be raised in Belarus in September, Dzmitry Kiyko, head of the finance ministry’s tax policy and budgetary revenues department, told reporters in Minsk on Wednesday, as quoted by BelaPAN.

According to him, the rates are to be increased by 10 percent for alcoholic products and by no less than 20 percent for tobacco products.

The decision is currently under consideration by concerned governmental agencies, Mr. Kiyko noted. One of the reasons for raising the rates is the implementation of the government’s program aimed at combating alcohol abuse and an agreement with the International Monetary Fund within the framework of the Fund’s stand-by program for Belarus, Mr. Kiyko said.

The most recent increase in the rates of excise taxes on alcoholic and tobacco products occurred on January 1, 2010.
