French ambassador speaks about EU-Belarus relations

The European Union is ready to expand cooperation with Belarus in exchange for more democratic freedoms in the country, French Ambassador Mireille Musso told reporters in Minsk on July 10.

The diplomat spoke about a recent visit by Helga Schmidt, deputy EU foreign police chief, to Minsk. “The purpose of her visit was to deliver a message to the Belarusian authorities, in which the European Union emphasized its wish to have closer relations with Belarus. However, all this will be possible only when the Belarusian authorities take obligations to grant people the right to enjoy democratic freedoms, which are the foundations of the EU,” Ms. Musso said.

France plans to prioritize security and energy policies, illegal migration and environmental protection while holding the EU presidency in the latter half of this year, according to the ambassador.
