There are more than 2.7 million Internet users in Belarus, minister says

There are more than 2.7 million people using the Internet in Belarus, Communications Minister Mikalay Pantsyaley said at Monday’s opening ceremony for TIBO 2008, an international IT exhibition in Minsk, BelaPAN reports.

Web access is provided in the country by over 150 operators, the minister noted.

The number of broadband Internet users has risen sharply to more than 170,000 people in the last few years. Over 100 Wi-Fi hotspots have appeared in Minsk and regional capitals recently, according to Mr. Pantsyaley.

Belarusian cell phone operators have a total of more than seven million subscribers, covering 89 percent of the country’s territory where over 97 percent of the population reside.

There are 37.3 fixed-line phones per 100 people in Belarus at present, Mr. Pantsyaley said.
