Opposition youth slapped with $93 fine over BNR anniversary demonstration in Vitsyebsk

Alyaksey Kuznyatsow, leader of the Vitsyebsk city chapter of the Belarusian Popular Front’s youth wing, was slapped with a fine of 200,000 rubels ($93) as a judge of the Kastrychnitski District Court found him guilty of organizing and holding an unauthorized demonstration on March 25, BelaPAN reports.

Mr. Kuznyatsow and three more members of the party’s youth wing were grabbed in Vitsyebsk on Monday evening after they demonstrated in front of a memorial to Belarusian author Uladzimir Karatkevich on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Belarusian National Republic.

They were apprehended as they were walking in the street with white-red-white flags following the demonstration.

Three of them were released shortly after an interview at the Kastrychnitski district police department because of their minor age, while Mr. Kuznyatsow spent the night in a detention center and stood trial on Tuesday.
