Four youths arrested in Vitsyebsk

Four members of the Malady Front opposition youth organization were grabbed in Vitsyebsk on Monday evening after they demonstrated in front of a memorial to Belarusian author Uladzimir Karatkevich on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Belarusian National Republic.

They were apprehended as they were walking in the street with white-red-white flags following the demonstration.

Three of them were released shortly after an interview at the Kastrychnitski district police department because of their minor age, local rights activist, Leanid Svetsik, told BelaPAN.

The fourth youth, Alyaksandr Kuznyatsow, was charged over the unsanctioned demonstration and put in custody pending trial. The three legal minors were summoned to appear at the trial as witnesses.

The activist has a child with disability, but the chief of the district police department flatly refused to let him out despite requests from local rights defenders, according to Mr. Svetsik.

The chief, Andrey Prakapovich, reportedly said that the man should have thought before about possible consequences of displaying «symbols that are not registered in the Republic of Belarus.»
